On December 1, 2003 terrestrial digital broadcasting launched in parts of three major metropolitan areas in Japan. Electronics makers are conducting year-end marketing campaigns with a main focus on thin TV, claiming that it provides ten-year durability.
As we foresee discontinued operation of digital broadcast by 2011, it needs to be watched carefully how the overall households with more than 100 million TV sets in Japan are going to replace with digital ones.
A questionnaire survey was conducted targeting about 500 households who have used a TV set with larger than 25-in. display for more than 7 years, who are likely to be early adopters of digital TV. The survey results were analyzed and summarized to learn: "How are users aware of terrestrial digital broadcast," "When do they plan for replacement purchase," and "What are the budget and requirements for a new TV set?"
